In Voluptas Mors (Voluptuous Death), 1951, was the most famous collaboration between renowned portrait photographer Philippe Halsman and renowned surrealist Salvador Dali. And, of course, seven flexible and patient nude models. Dali designed the image and Halsman and his staff executed it with Dali’s guidance in only three hours. That may sound like a long time to work on a single image but for anyone who has worked in a photography studio, that is an astoundingly short time for an image of this complexity. Halsman and his staff must have 1.) functioned like clockwork and 2.) have done a tremendous amount of preparation. It paid off.
